Free HIV Testing Available for National HIV Testing Day
(Paducah, KY) – Heartland CARES, Inc. (HCI) and Hope Unlimited Family Care Center will be providing fast, free and confidential HIV testing as part of National HIV Testing Day, Tuesday, June 27, 2017 from 10:00 am until 5:30 pm. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all people ages 13-64 get tested at least once. People at higher risk should be tested at least once per year and people who engage in more risky behaviors benefit f
from even more frequent testing.
HCI staff and trained volunteers will administer the rapid test at Hope Unlimited Family Care Center’s Paducah office, 1101 Jefferson Street. The rapid test takes approximately 15 minutes and requires a slight finger prick.
According to the CDC and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, one in eight Americans who are infected with HIV do not know it. At least one Kentuckian is diagnosed with HIV every day.
“We are able to refer a person who tests positive to our clinic for free follow-up care immediately,” according to Heartland CARES Executive Director Donna Reeder. “Our services at HCI are comprehensive, which means that we will not only help you with medical care, but we may also be able to assist with support services to help alleviate the many barriers an HIV positive client may face,” Reeder added.
In addition to HIV testing at the event, Hope Unlimited Family Care Center will offer sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. As an incentive for testing, the first 20 people who come in for an HIV test will receive a $10 Walmart gift card and have an opportunity to win one of four $50 Walmart gift cards.
“We’re very excited to continue our partnership with Heartland Cares, Inc. for National HIV Testing Day,” said Hope Unlimited Family Care Center Nurse Manager Debbie Sneddon. “Both of our organizations want to promote the health of our community – individuals and families.
